I have studied art with several top teachers in New York and am familiar with many others, but I have never studied with a better teacher than Michiyo. In terms of understanding a student's needs and communicating the best way of reaching his or her desired goals, there is simply no one better than Michiyo.

I have been taking private lessons from Michiyo for about a year. Michiyo impresses me not only as a great artist but also a great teacher.
Her way of teaching is sincere and precise. Although I am a still a beginner of water color, I can now master the basic techniques in “perspective”, “light and shade”, etc. More importantly, through her timely, accurate, and inspirational advice and lessons, I am able to improve my works a lot.

In water color,"white" is supposed to be left without color. At first, this concept was difficult to be understood as a complete beginner like me. She gives me her careful instruction and accurate advice and meanwhile she kindly tries to stick to my idea questioning what I want to do.  She also encourages her students to challenge more intriguing subjects because she believes the challenge will expand painting skills and theme. I will assure she is not only a talented artist but also a great teacher.

Last summer I created a painting on my own of the harbor at Honfleur, France, based on a photo from a trip many years ago.  When I finished the painting, I knew that it lacked depth and vibrancy, but was at a loss as to what I could do to bring it to life.  With Michiyo’s expert guidance and instruction, I was able to add the critical elements that slowly transformed the painting into the vision that I was seeking to express.
